Artist In Depth: Philip George

Now unless you’ve literally been sleeping under a rock, you will definitely have heard Philip George’s Wish You Were Mine, which has been taking the club scene by storm since January. Well, seeing as he’s a Nottingham boy, we thought we should do some digging. Here’s what we found!

The first I heard of Philip George was when I somehow stumbled across this video, which had gone viral on Facebook. To date, I still don’t know what remix the track he’s rapping over is, but nonetheless, it was enough to make me inquisitive!

Wish You Were Mine catapulted Philip George into the limelight, skyrocketing up to no. 2 in the UK Top 40 in January 2015 – held off the top sport by Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk; hardly weak competition! Philip is said to have created WYWM in his bedroom, in Chilwell, and perhaps more impressively, only quit his job in clothes chain Next just three weeks before landing the No. 2 spot… Not bad if you ask us!

But George was no musical novice, having started playing piano aged 5, according to the Nottingham Post.  His Soundcloud was a wealth of tracks on it, some that literally only a handful of enthusiasts have sought out – we’ve posted a couple of them below. Philip’s trademark sound is a recurring theme throughout, and whilst all different to WYWM, there are some clear overlaps; we think they are particularly noticeable in Phyaero –  which has just 54k streams. Whilst thats undoubtedly still a lot of listeners, compare that with the 12 million views Wish You Were Mine has on Soundcloud alone, and Phyaero is virtually unheard! Also worth checking out are Waiting and for those of you who like it a bit heavier,  Back Down has a great bassline.

George did enjoy some success with Love Inside, which gathered some momentum as fans trawled his back catalogue, but here at Basement Beats we certainly think the best is yet to come. We’re predicting a follow up single some time this year, which we expect to make the UK Top 10, and perhaps even take the coveted No. 1 – who knows! It’s clear that Philip George is going places, which is not only good for us as fans, but good for Nottingham as a city!
